This artwork is actually the whole Manuel Carneiro street, connecting the other two streets of Pinto Martins and Joaquim Silva, but among the locals it is more known as Escadaria Selaron or Selaron Steps! The name is devoted in memory of the artist who masterfully decorated these steps - Jorge Selaron.

The artists decided to give some special touch to the steps leading to his house and he started his artwork back in 1990. In the few first months the neighbours were not very happy about the palitra of colors, as the choice was the colors of Brazilian flag.  But Jorge was strong and didn't change a thing. The simple pleasure turned into obsession as the artist had to even sell his own paintings in order to complete this street project. But finally it was completed - the 125 meters long, covering 250 steps with more than 2000 tiles of different color!

These unique steps became a symbol of Rio de Janeiro and the artist would still probably continue his work if not a mysterious death in 2013, when he was found nowhere else but lying on his steps.
