The northern boundary of the Riviera, Puerto Morelos is located 16 km from the Cancun airport. Before the beginning of the last century it was the place of gathering of divers for the sea sponges. Sponge is an indicator of purity of water. Since then, little has changed: right in front of the village there is a colorful coral reef. A couple of kilometers to the south of Puerto Morelos there is a huge emerald spot, botanical garden named after Alfredo Barrera Marina. There are many walking routes, but wherever you go, be sure to see typical for the region's plants - cacti, orchids and geveyu - which latex is used to make rubber. There is a park and a well-preserved Mayan ruins of buildings dating back to XV century.

The reserve Rio Secreto (half an hour by car south of the Botanical Garden) offers visitors to explore one of the world's largest cave systems, through which flows an underground river. Here you can go - and partly swim - through a maze of ancient natural rooms where stalactites and stalagmites merge with echoes, repeatedly reflected by the crystal walls.

If you go further to the south, you get to Tulum - one of the most visited cities of the Maya civilization, and in a couple of hours - to the biosphere reserve of Sian Ka'an. It has everything that nature of Mexico is rich in: tropical forests, mangroves, swamp green, wild beaches where sea turtles lay their eggs, and the amazing lagoon of Boca Pyle where salty sea water is mixed with fresh water from underground rivers. In short, the Riviera Maya attractions are very diverse and in fact quite close to each other - especially if you live in a strategically correct place.
