It is of volcanic origin and is famous for its amazing Martian landscapes that Martian landscapes can be seen in the Timanfaya National Park. Lanzarote is located 115 kilometers from the coast of Africa. Area of the beautiful volcanic island is 846 square kilometers. Its name comes from the name of the Genoese merchant Lanselotto Malotsello, who landed on the island in the early 14th century.

The capital and the most populous city of the island Lanzarote is Arrecife. It is a beautiful historic port with ancient fortresses of Castillo de San Jose and Castillo de San Gabriel. Lanzarote is a true Volcanic Reserve. In total, about thirty craters are located on the island. In August 1974, in the south-western part of the island, Timanfaya National Park was opened. Its purpose was the protection of the unique nature and stunning volcanic landscapes.

Beautiful Martian landscapes of Lanzarote were formed on the island during the six years of continuous eruption, which lasted from 1730 to 1736. During this time, almost half of the island was covered with thick layers of lava and ash. Now in the National Park Lanzarote there is only one active volcano Timanfaya - it is in its honor the volcanic nature reserve was named.

Park on the island of Lanzarote is the second most popular among all the parks in the Canary Islands. In order not to harm the unique nature, moving through the park takes place only at the specially established tourist routes. There are hiking trails and roads designed for cars and buses.
