Underwater Tunnels In Norway – Will They Become A Reality?

Or we will still have to complete a 21 hour journey through seven ferry crossings?

The country of the most beautiful views and sceneries, Norway has become the favorite destination for both cruisers and land travelers. Any road you take in the country looks like from traveling magazine, with its vibrant nature, greenery and amazing fjords – the landmark of Norway. One of the most beautiful roads though stays E39, which goes along the western coastline and connects Kristiansand and Trondheim. This the best road for watching powerful fjords in its power, but one thing is really disappointing – you will have to complete 21 hour drive for such views. The situation could have changed, if a recently proposed project of building several underwater tunnels would be approved!

According to the project, the tunnel would be designed or two 4000 ft long tubes and each of them working for separate directions. There would be two lanes available in each of the tube – one for regular traveling, and the second will serve in case of  emergencies or road repairs. The whole project is worth of approximately 25 million dollars and would run under few fjords along the same coastline. But the best part of it, the time for traveling would be reduced exactly in half! As currently the lands on both sides of the fjords are connected with nothing else, but ferries only, because the distance between the lands is too wide and the depth of the waters doesn't allow to construct regular bridges.

The researches done back 2012 came to the conclusion that the best option for Norway would be the underwater tunnels, while the first one was proposed for Sognefjord, Oppedal and Lavik.
The the project is approved and the tunnels are built,  they would be no danger for the current cruise and military ships passing by as they would hang around 65-100 ft below the water.

Being underwater makes the tunnels work no matter what kind of weather conditions are outside. The hanging position of the tunnels would be controlled by special pontoons which would be placed far apart for the ships to pass through easily.  Such an innovation would mean that those people living now so remotely don't need to wait for the helicopter to go to the hospital!

Hopefully the new project will be approved in the nearest future, so in the next seven or nine years we could travel the Norway by means of underground tunnels with Vacations Cruise Travels.
