The nursery was founded in 1975 as a shelter for sick and injured elephants, as well as an orphanage for elephants abandoned by their parents, found in the forests of Sri Lanka.

Over time, in addition to the shelter care for baby elephants they became more engaged in their cultivation, turning it into a real elephant nursery, the largest on the island and in the whole world. Over the past thirty years, there were born about two dozen of elephants.

By the way, strong adult males are engaged in some works on the territory of the nursery, such as the transportation of food. Since the size of the nursery is limited, because of this all of their food is imported. Each adult animal consumes about 76 kg of green grass and about 2 kg of food supplements containing rice bran and corn daily.
