The wave here extends over a distance of 2.2 kilometers from the isolated rock ledge to the longest pier on the barren coast. Locals confirm that all this distance can be overcome in one single wave. The length of the coast from the Cape to the west end is 4 kilometers, but nobody has been able to conquer the wave  at this distance.

Chicama surfing potential was first discovered in 1965 by the Hawaiian surfer Chuck Shipmanom. According to legend, he saw the waves from the plane window and was struck by their great length. He asked the pilot about this place, and upon returning to Hawaii found it on the map and wrote to his friends in Peru about the discovery. They decided together to explore the northwest coast, but the first attempt to search was not successful - they could not find uncharted dirt road in Chicama. After some time, another group of surfers discovered it and since then the coast has become a popular sport Chicama direction.

Typically, these waves are not related to each other, but when their height exceeds two meters (this is rare) - it is possible to overcome all the distance to the pier in the same breath. This year, the legendary coast of Chicama became the world's first secure surfing Park. The Peruvian government has banned any construction work in the area of 1 kilometer from the coast, so as not to disturb the wind flow and the structure of the coast. The government plans to protect a few of these places, and ultimately the country hopes to create 130 sheltered surfing zones, which will attract a lot of tourists.
